Michael Phelps to help our youth obesity problem

In my last blog entry, I talked about how cereal manufacturers are getting more and more clever at disguising their crappy products.

In case you haven’t heard, Michael Phelps just teamed up with Kellogs to help promote a healthier lifestyle for our youth.

At first glance, you probably think this sounds like a good idea, but allow me to help you see the big picture.

If my sources are correct, Phelps will be displayed on the box cover of Corn Flakes, Frosted Flakes and Rice Krispie treats. Do you consider these cereals healthy? I sure hope not.

These are sugar-laden cereals that are they are trying to disguise as being healthy. Children will see Michael Phelps on the box and ask their parents to buy it for them.

So what is Kellogs doing? Are they really trying to help our youth at a time when obesity is at an all-time high? I seriously doubt it. They’re just looking to increase their profit margin by having a superstar on their cereals.

What the heck happened to General Mills? For decades, Wheaties held the tradition of having American Olympians on their box cover. So much for the Breaksfast of Champions. Considering there are only a few good cold cereals left, Wheaties would have been a much better fit.

Please educate yourself and your children on this matter and leave some comments. I want to know what you think.

Should you eat cereal?

Can you believe I turned 34 today. It’s amazing how time flies once you graduate college. Anyway, I’m blessed to have my life, health, and strength along with good people in my corner who love me and believe in me. Thank you to everyone who has ever supported me in any way.

Today I want to talk about cereal and whether I think it’s a good idea to eat it or not?

It’s easy to let yourself be fooled into thinking the things you eat are healthy.

The manufaturers dress foods up in crafty packaging and try to lead you to believe they will help you lose weight. But do they?

The truth is that most of the time the only thing good about the so-called healthy food product is the clever marketing.

CEREAL

Can a box of cereal help you lose weight? That’s the message being sent out by a handful of cereal brands, namely Special-K. This cereal manufacturer has gone so far as to create the Special-K Challenge, a program which claims to help drop 6 pounds in 2 weeks. The message that most consumers take away from the cereal commercials is “If I eat this brand of cereal then I will lose weight.

“Wait, don’t grab a bowl of your favorite cereal along with your skinny jeans just yet.

It’s dangerous to think that any food item will promote weight loss, especially a food item that is high in simple carbohydrates. In the fine print you will see that the cereal claims to help lose weight when incorporated with a very low calorie diet, and that the cereal itself has no weight loss inducing power.

I’m not a huge fan of eating cereal when trying to get lean because it is so easy to over consume. However, if you must eat it, follow these tips to ensure more success.

I teach my clients that if they are going to eat cold cereal, look for brands that are higher in fiber like Fiber One and Kashi Go-Lean. Also they’re never allowed to eat cereal alone. It must be consumed with a serving of lean protein and a fruit or vegetable.

What type of protein should I eat you ask?

You could always put a scoop of protein powder in milk and pour it in your cereal. Another good choice would be to eat an egg mixed with a few egg whites.

The point of the matter is that isn’t doesn’t matter as much as to which protein you decide to eat as long it is the lean non-fatty kind.

Those are just a few simple suggestions in your quest for less butts and guts that are easy to do, but they’re also easy not to do. The choice is yours.

Can you believe that commercial? What will these marketing geniuses think of next? Will they tell you smoking is okay every other day?

Let me set the record straight, HFCS is bad, very bad. It’s worse than sugar. If you care about the health of yourself and your loved ones, do yourself a favor and stay away from it.

My First “Blog”!

I’m finally starting my very own blog. I just returned from the Ryan Lee Boot Camp on Sunday and they drilled it in to our heads that all fitness professionals should have a blog. Today is September 23, 2008.  Here I will keep you posted on books and articles I read along with any other ramblings I may think of.

Stay tuned and I hope you enjoy it!
